Centrum Optimi Educational Foundation recently conducted a visit to Ife-Oluwa C&S High School in Ilesa West Local Government Area, Osun State. We assessed the learning conditions and identified where support is most needed for both students and teachers. The students described their classrooms as usable and affirmed that they have access to basic learning materials; however, they struggle with hindrances such as a slow understanding of lessons and irregular attendance caused by sickness and an inability to pay their school fees. They also mentioned how they lack teachers in important subjects such as Economics and Cultural & Creative Arts. The teachers, on the other hand, report large class sizes, limited teaching materials, and infrequent training, which reduces their effectiveness. They note that the learning difficulties many students face are related to issues at home and distractions from mobile phones, especially among the senior high school students. They emphasised the need for better facilities, proper furniture, and improved support for the teachers.
Overall, the school's learning environment shows dedication from both students and teachers, but it faces structural gaps that affect performance. The Foundation has identified the priority areas for intervention, which include providing teaching materials, improving the school’s infrastructure, supporting teachers development, and helping to address the barriers that keep the students out of school. This assessment guides our ongoing commitment to improving education in underprivileged communities and creating environments where every learner can thrive.
