Quality education begins when the right people listen. At our recent school visit to Marafa Dan Baba Model Primary School, Sokoto State, Nigeria, both the teachers and students had the opportunity to share their thoughts about their everyday teaching and learning experiences.
Many of the students described the school environment as a welcoming place to learn. They attest to enjoying coming to school and valuing the support they receive from their teachers. Most of them reported that they have access to desks, chairs, and basic writing materials, making the classroom comfortable for learning. However, one of the biggest concerns is the lack of a reliable electricity supply, which affects both teaching and learning activities. Students also mentioned inadequate funding, limited textbooks and learning materials, and low interest in learning among some of their classmates. The teachers, on the other hand, remain committed despite the challenges. They rated their students' overall academic performance at an average of 4.5 out of 5. However, they mentioned several challenges that continue to affect the quality of education in the school. These include inadequate funding, a shortage of teaching materials, poor educational facilities, a lack of electricity, and limited cooperation between the school management and staff.
What, then, is the way forward? Both students and teachers at Marafa Dan Baba Primary School shared similar recommendations for improvement. They believe the school will immensely benefit from better funding for educational activities, more textbooks and teaching materials, reliable electricity, improved classrooms and educational facilities, and stronger collaboration between the school management, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. These practical steps provided by the students and teachers would help create a better learning environment.
